Choosing a 4K Virtual Pinball Machine: VPX, Displays and Feedback

Understand Visual Pinball X (VPX), 4K playfields, backglass displays, surround sound feedback and accelerometer nudging before choosing a virtual pinball cabinet.

A digital pinball table built as furniture

A virtual pinball machine uses a horizontal display for the playfield, upright displays for the backglass, and physical controls for play. It brings digital pinball into a dedicated cabinet. Grand Pinball pairs this format with a fully enclosed solid-hardwood cabinet, framed raised panels and polished brass detailing, designed and built in Wyoming.

Visual Pinball X and VPX

Visual Pinball X, usually shortened to VPX, is a pinball simulator and table editor with cabinet-oriented display and controller support. Rasterdeck Grand Pinball uses a custom VPX fork and custom PinUP Popper-compatible backglass software. The cabinet hardware, software and individual table content are separate parts of the experience; compatibility and rights to a particular table depend on that content. The screen artwork in our product illustrations does not describe an included game library.

The playfield, backglass and DMD

Grand Pinball has a 42-inch 4K playfield, two 22-inch backglass displays and an 8-inch DMD with an 8:1 aspect ratio. The long playfield gives the table its familiar playing position. The enclosed upright backglass housing is wider than the playfield and keeps the backglass and score displays integrated with the cabinet, with the upper backglass tilted forward toward the player. Four flipper buttons, two on each side, plus P1 and P2 start buttons on the front face.

Surround sound feedback and cabinet exciters

Sound exciters transfer vibration into the cabinet so digital events have a physical presence. Grand Pinball combines exciters with a 7.1 audio system. Surround sound feedback, often called SSF in virtual pinball discussions, uses spatial audio and cabinet vibration to help connect the screen action to the machine around it. The response depends on the table software and its audio content.

Accelerometer nudging

An accelerometer senses movement of the cabinet and supplies physical nudge input to the pinball software. This lets the player interact with the table body as well as the flipper controls. Software settings and individual tables affect how that movement is interpreted.

Wood, finish and the room around the table

The standard mahogany presentation shows the furniture styling, while the piano-black option gives the machine an opaque black finish. Choose available species, finish, joinery and edge details in the product configurator. Real material samples are the best way to compare wood and finish under your own lighting; phone and monitor colors can differ from the finished material.

Production and freight delivery

Grand Pinball starts at $34,999 before selected options and tax. Allow approximately four months for production; we make every effort to finish and ship earlier. Finish options can extend that estimate. Purchase the machine now; freight is quoted and charged separately after completion, before dispatch. Freight estimate: $1,000–$2,500 for the contiguous United States. Estimate—not guaranteed. Actual cost may be higher or lower depending on destination, packed size and weight, insurance and delivery access. Freight is quoted and charged separately after the unit is complete, before dispatch. It is not included in today’s payment.

Plan the room and delivery route

Grand Pinball’s approximate overall size: 30 × 58 × 78 in (76 × 147 × 198 cm). Use the current listing and agreed final dimensions to check the footprint and height.
